Altstadt “Pelourinho” is the name of the historical center of  Salvador.
Salvador was established in 1549 and was the first capital of Brazil. Thousands of African slaves were abducted from their homelands and were brought to this main square and slave market in the 17th and 18th century. It is this rich African culture and religion that blends into the unique Brazilian way of life still today.
The baroque churches and colonial architecture in the old part of town gives this town a very special atmosphere.

The inhabitants of Bahia are well-known for their spontaneity, enjoying life and their kind hospitality. Therefore, Salvador is called “Capital da Alegria” - the capital of happiness.
The warm-hearted people of Bahia enjoy hot temperatures all year around and are deeply creative when it comes to their, music, religious festivities and cuisine.
